Pyotr Alexandrovich Sabouroff (Saburov, 1835-1918) well-known Russian diplomat and statesman, formed his collection of antique terracottas predominantly in Greece, where he has a Russian ambassador and plenipotentiary minister from 1870 to 1879. His collection was acquired by the Imperial Hermitage in 1884, by which time, above all, it was already famous amongst collectors and archaeologists for its superb Tanagra figurines.
