This publication was prepared for the exhibition "Abode of Mercy. The Art of Tibetan Buddhism". The сatalogue introduces the works of the Buddhist Tibetan art: sculpture, paintings and ritual objects. Among the items, the majority of which are being exhibited for the first time, are Buddhist sculpture, works of painting (thangkas), including mandalas, images used in astrological rituals, funerary objects, ghau reliquaries and tsa tsa. Particularly noteworthy is the Hermitage’s only Bon statuette – a unique figurine of a deity in the Bon religion, which was the main belief system before the foundation of the Tibetan state in the early 7th century and maintained its dominant position in Tibet right up to the 13th century. Far fewer Bon works have survived than traditional sculptures and paintings. The foundation of the museums stocks of Tibetan art is formed by collections assembled in the early 20th century by outstanding explorers of Central Asia – Esper Ukhtomsky, Yury Roerich, Piotr Kozlov and others. Altogether t he Hermitage’s collection numbers over 3,500 items. Many of the exhibits are published for the first time. The catalogue is designed for professionals, collectors and art lovers, as well as for all those interested in Tibetan Buddhism.
