The exhibition “Birds: Messengers of Gods. Western European Applied Art of the 16th to 19th Centuries” is on display at the State Hermitage Museum (17 April 2013 – 29 September 2013). Sacred birds often appeared in applied artworks as eternal companions of Gods, their attributes and heralds.

More than a hundred exhibits are shown here: carved stones, jewelry, silver and porcelain pieces, tapestries, furniture and fabrics, objects made of ivory, enamels, embroideries and laces. Created during the period from 16th to 19th century, they show virtuosic craftsmanship of artists who once worked in Italy, France, Germany and England. All displayed items are unified by one subject – birds, messengers of the gods.
