The present edition of the catalogue “Rembrandt’s Prints from the Dmitry Rovinsky's Collection in the State Hermitage” prepared by Roman Grigoryev is dedicated to two persons – the great artist Rembrandt van Rijn and the founder of print studies in Russia and the famous print collector Dmitry Rovinsky. The phenomenon of Rembrandt the printmaker is not to be equalled in the history of art. The world created on the paper by the Dutch artist can easily rival the world on his canvases.

In the catalogue, we find the etchings which in the late 19th century were attributed to Rembrandt by Dmitry Rovinsky. Printed in Leiden and Amsterdam they include early portraits of Rembrandt’s mother and the artist’s self-portraits of the 1620s, as well as the last etching made in 1665 – Portrait of Jan Antonides van der Linden. This collection was given to the Hermitage in 1897 in accordance with the testament of Dmitry Rovinsky and is one of the largest private collections of Rembrandt’s works.
