Stephan Balkenhol. Sculptures and Reliefs

Stephan Balkenhol (b. 1957) is a German sculptor. He gained international recognition as one of the main contemporary proponents of figurative art. Exhibitions of his work have been held in some of the world’s leading museums and his sculptures stand in many European cities. The artist first started depicting the human figure in the 1980s, standing out against the minimalism and conceptualism that then dominated German art. Man remains the central subject of Balkenhol’s work today, although in more recent times his circle of interests have come to include animals, architecture and the natural landscape. A return to tradition is a feature of the artist’s output not only in terms of subject but in the techniques he employs, carving his sculptures from whole pieces of wood, using the simplest of tools and preserving the material’s natural texture.
